KPE 348 Computer Based Language Learning (or Computer-Assisted Language Learning)
This course is designed to introduce students to the underlying principles of the use of technology (including Web 2.0 tools) in language classrooms. This course will also show the students how to search, select, and evaluate a body of internet-based (or web-based/online/electronic) materials and to provide hands-on experiences in developing computer- or web-based learning materials and activities. Therefore this course is both theoretical and practical in nature.
The topics of this course include: 1) the use of asynchronous and synchronous communication tools, 2) searching, selecting, evaluating and creating online or web-based materials, 3) Google search skills, 4) the use of Web 2.0 tools (blogs, wikis, social networking tools and others), and authoring tools (Hot Potatoes for example).
The class would be conducted mostly in the form of workshop: a brief lecture or class demonstration, followed by students' hands-on knowledge and practice on the technology/tools. They then have to present their plan of applying those tools in the class to their friends.
This course is elective and offered in semester six. The prerequisites courses for this course is Approaches, Methods and Techniques, Learning Program Design and Language Learning Assessment.
